lawrence is at the pentagon. chris, i don't even know where to begin because there's so much to talk about. let's start with general allen. what's the implications of this -- of him being brought in to petraeus scandal and what has he said about it? >> so far, from what we've heard from defense officials, soledad, john allen has denied any wrongdoing in this matter. what is the matter at hand is on sunday the fbi notified the pentagon that they had 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails, which contained inappropriate contact between general john allen, and jill kelley. yesterday, secretary panetta asked that john kelley -- or john allen's nomination to be the head of nato be pulled back and put on hold while the inspector general starts to dig through all of these pages to find out exactly what happened. here's how it all connects. general john allen was stationed in tampa when he was at u.s. central command. so was general david petraeus. jill kelley worked as sort of a social liaison with a lot of the commanders there. in fact, she's been -- won awards for her work with some of the military f

is implicated. the pentagon says general john allen apparently had inappropriate communication with the woman linked to the scandal. as fox's ainsley earhart reports, the fbi is busy with multiple investigations. >> reporter: fbi agents searching the home of paula broadwell, the woman whose affair with general david petraeus led to his resignation as the cia director. the agents went to her house in charlotte, north carolina on monday night. some of the general's former staff members and friends reportedly shocked that this woman was sending e-mails warning jill kelley to stay away from him. now, john allen is under investigation. defense secretary leon pan eight said he ordered an investigation of general allen on monday. the secretary who is a former cia director also talking about general petraeus' resignation. he says, quote, i think he took the right step and i think it is important when you are director of the cia with all the challenges that fess you in that position that personal integrity comes first and foremost. general petraeus was scheduled to testify about the benghazi attacks.

. the pentagon says it is investigating inappropriate communications between general john allen and jill kelley, the woman that petraeus' mistress allegedly sent threatening e-mails to you. the fbi reportedly uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 allegedly inappropriate e-mails between allen and kelley. she's a social liaison at the military base in florida. the general insists he's friends with kelley, but paula broadwell apparently saw her as a romantic rival. the fbi is keeping quiet of a search of broadwell's home. agents searched her home for five hours last night. they left with several boxes. broadwell's relationship with petraeus first came to light when the fbi began investigating jill kelley's claims that broadwell had sent her threatening e-mails. and the fbi is putting together a time line of the investigation to explain to members of congress why they were kept out of the loop until recently. they didn't know about the probe until last tuesday even though it had been going on for months. senate intelligence chair dianne feinstein said she learned about it from the media last week. meantime, s

petraeus' affair appears to have also ensnared his successor in afghanistan. the pentagon has now launched an investigation into, quote, potentially inappropriate e-mails between general allen and jill kelly, the petraeus family friend at the center of this increasingly strange scandal. the fbi has turned over 20,000 to 30,000 pages of documents found during the probe. many are e-mails between allen and kelly sent over the last two years. it was kelly, petraeus' former deputy in tampa, who went to the fbi about threatening e-mails she was receiving. they were eventually traced back to petraeus' biographer, paula broadwell, spurring the investigation that led to the cia director's resignation. meantime, overnight, nearly a dozen federal agents descended on paula broadwell's home. spending several hours going floor-to-floor, leaving with a desktop computer, cardboard boxes and a briefcase. authorities say broadwell consented to the search. just a few hours later, vernon loeb, who spent 16 months working side-by-side with broadwell on her biography of petraeus, told the website, he had no ide
